Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

Since April 2026, HMRC has required self-employed business owners and landlords with income over £50,000 to keep digital records and file quarterly updates. We'll get you ready — software, training and submissions handled.

The basics

What is MTD for Income Tax?

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for IT) is HMRC's plan to modernise the way self-employed people and landlords report their income. Instead of one annual Self Assessment return, you'll keep digital records and send updates to HMRC every quarter using MTD-compatible software.

It's the biggest change to personal tax in a generation — and it's coming whether you're ready or not. The good news: once you're set up properly, it's actually less work than the annual scramble.

Who's affected

Does it apply to you?

You're in scope if your qualifying income exceeds the threshold for that tax year:

Self-employed

Sole traders with annual business income over the threshold.
